Propaganda versus Professionalism

"War correspondents can be heroes - but can they be patriots?" asks the former editor of The Sunday Times and The Times. "Put it another way: is the first duty of the correspondent to truth or to his country?" In an extract from his new book, Evans examines when, if ever, if it permissible for newsmen to "take sides" when reporting armed conflicts around the world. His conclusion: "One's first duty is to humanity, and there are exceptional occasions when that duty overrides the canons of any profession."
